How Christian Helping Hands Is Helping Seniors Stay Strong, Connected, and Supported

For many seniors, the hardest part of aging is not always the physical challenges. Sometimes, it’s the quiet.

The empty chair at the dinner table. The long afternoons. The uncertainty of navigating rising costs, health concerns, and complicated assistance programs alone.

That’s why the Senior Stay Strong and Healthy Program at Christian Helping Hands has become such a meaningful part of life for seniors like Joe and Loretta.

What began as a nutrition-focused gathering has grown into something even deeper: a place where seniors can find encouragement, practical support, and a caring community that walks alongside them.

Senior Nutrition

More Than a Program — A Community

Twice each month, local seniors gather at the Comanche Nutrition Center for fellowship, lunch, conversation, and resources designed to help them continue living healthy, independent lives.

The program originally began with nutrition classes taught by Brenda Gandy Jones of the Stephens County OSU Extension Office. Brenda helped seniors understand the importance of healthy eating and caring for their bodies as they age.

“Many seniors are at home and alone. They may not want to cook a full meal for one or two people,” Jones shared during the early days of the program. “We want to encourage them to eat a variety of healthy foods. When you eat right, you feel good.”

Though Brenda has since retired, the heart of the program continues.

Today, the focus has evolved to help seniors navigate the real-life challenges they face every day — from understanding benefits and applying for assistance programs to connecting with resources that can make life a little easier.

For Joe and Loretta, those resources matter. But just as important is knowing there is a place where they are welcomed, valued, and never treated like a burden.

A Place Where Seniors Feel Comfortable

After gathering together, seniors are invited to shop at the Christian Helping Hands food pantry during a quieter shopping time reserved specifically for them.

That intentional act of care helps many seniors feel more comfortable and less overwhelmed.

“Seniors are grateful to get the special shopping time at the food pantry after the class and lunch,” said Summer Ennis, Operations Manager at Christian Helping Hands. “They are more comfortable and less anxious since it isn’t as crowded as the regular Friday shopping.”

For Joe and Loretta, it’s not just about groceries. It’s about dignity.

The pantry allows seniors to choose foods that work best for their household while volunteers offer help, conversation, and kindness along the way.

One participant described it this way: “You get to choose your own food. It’s just like shopping in a store, but there is always someone to help you.”

Continuing to Grow and Meet New Needs

Christian Helping Hands believes caring for seniors means listening to their changing needs and continuing to adapt.

Beginning in July, the Senior Stay Strong and Healthy Program will continue evolving with a new focus on movement, mobility, and staying active as we age. Seniors will learn practical ways to increase mobility, maintain strength, and continue living independently for as long as possible.

The goal is simple: helping older adults stay strong physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

Because everyone deserves to age with dignity, encouragement, and hope.

The Small Moments Matter Most

For Joe and Loretta, the program is built on simple but meaningful moments:

  • A shared meal.
  • A volunteer carrying groceries to the car.
  • A conversation that makes someone feel seen.
  • A room filled with laughter and understanding.

These moments may seem small, but for seniors who often face loneliness or uncertainty, they can mean everything.
